Below are two sample chapters from Driving Around Waiting to Get Blown Up. The first, “Beyond a Reasonable Doubt,” was published by Consequence Forum and can be found here:

It shows the dangerous and ambiguous environment in which U.S. forces had to operate in Iraq and how relatively junior leaders (such as myself) were responsible for the lives of not just the American soldiers in their care but also the Iraqi people with whom they lived.

The second piece is unpublished and is called, “The Whitest Guy.” The eponymous character is me, but the piece is about Specialist Howard, a soldier in my battery who died before we deployed to Iraq. He was a veteran of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, a real character and a good dude. His death hit everyone in the unit very hard, not least of whom, me.
